For decades, this chest of drawers stood in a fabric merchant’s shop in Rajasthan, its drawers opened a hundred times a day. Ribbons, buttons and folded silks went in and out; fingers found the same brass pulls until they turned so! and warm. When the shop finally closed, the chest stayed behind — too heavy to move, too loved to sell.
It is teak, most likely mid-century, built by a carpenter who clearly expected it to work hard. The joinery is simple and honest, and every drawer still runs true. The wood has darkened unevenly — lighter where the sun reached it, deeper where hands did.
“The beauty lies in the imperfect”
In the workshop, it was cleaned, steadied and waxed — and that is all. The small dents around the pulls stay. The faded patch where the a!ernoon sun came through the shop door stays. A piece like this doesn’t need improving; it needs a new room to listen to.
We picture it in a hallway, greeting people the way it always has — or in a dining room, holding the linens and the good glasses, and keeping its opinions to itself.
