People often ask us why Soulosofie ended up in Mallorca. The honest answer is that it started with our own house. Rickard and I bought our home in Bendinat in 2015. A year later, Soulosofie was born in Stockholm. And then we started furnishing the house.
We looked everywhere, but couldn’t really find what we were looking for. Old wood, worn colours, pieces with a bit of soul. Things that had lived a little. Things that felt like us.
“And somewhere there, a small idea started to grow.”
For a few years, it stayed just that. An idea in the back of my mind. But when Rickard joined Soulosofie full time, suddenly Mallorca didn’t feel quite so far away. I started looking at Idealista every single day. Every. Single. Day. I knew what I wanted. A big, slightly rough space where we could fill with furniture and people could walk around, touch things and discover. Everyone told me Son Bugadelles was the place. They also told me finding a warehouse there was almost impossible.
In January 2020, Rickard and I were in Jodhpur, staying at Ajit Bhawan as we always do. One evening over dinner, I checked Idealista. Again. And there it was. A warehouse in Son Bugadelles.
We asked our contact Benita to go and take some photos. While we waited, Rickard and I sat there talking. Should we really take a warehouse we had never seen? Apparently, yes. That same evening, we reserved it.
And the very next day, we started buying furniture. Not for one container, but two. Because apparently, once we decide to do something, we really do it.
Around us, people had started talking about a virus in China. We didn’t think much about it. We had absolutely no idea what was coming.
135 days in Mallorca
When we came home from India, we went straight to Mallorca to sign the contract and start all the paperwork for the Spanish company. At the beginning of March, we were back in Stockholm. By then, everything was starting to feel very uncertain, and we were convinced Sweden would soon go into lockdown. So we quickly booked flights back to Mallorca.
We got that one completely wrong. Sweden stayed relatively open. Spain went into lockdown. And suddenly we were in Mallorca, with a new company being set up, two containers somewhere on their way from India — although nobody really knew when they would arrive — and no idea what would happen next.
We didn’t dare go back to Stockholm. If we left Spain, we had no idea if we would be able to get back when the containers finally arrived. So we stayed. For 135 days. Definitely not part of the plan. Back in Stockholm, our kids stepped in and took care of the Swedish store. I’ll never forget that.
Eight months after that dinner in Jodhpur, our first containers finally arrived. We had done it. Soulosofie was in Mallorca.
But after a while, I started to realise something. The warehouse was good. The area was good. Everything made sense. It just didn’t quite feel like us. So, naturally, I went back to Idealista. And there it was. A space in Can Valero. This time, I knew immediately. In 2022 we moved, and that’s when Soulosofie Mallorca really started to feel like home.
It makes me smile when I think about it now. A warehouse reserved over dinner in India. Two containers of furniture bought almost immediately. 135 unexpected days in Mallorca. And then another move because something in me said there was a better place waiting.
But maybe that’s quite typical of us. We don’t really do 200-page plans. We find something we believe in, trust the people around us and see where it takes us.
And all of this started because we couldn’t find the furniture we wanted for our own home. So we brought it here ourselves.
Big hug, Sofie
