Kantha began as thrift. Worn-out saris were layered and held together with a running stitch, over and over, until the cloth was a quilt — soft, dense and covered in the tracks of somebody’s hands.
These covers are cut from those old quilts and dyed with natural indigo, so the blue sits unevenly over the stitching and the pattern underneath still shows through. Every cover comes from a different quilt, which means every one is different: the stitching, the shade of blue, the ghost of the original fabric.
