Cutwork is slow. The pattern is cut out of one layer of cotton, then every raw edge is turned under and stitched down by hand onto the layer beneath it — metre after metre of it.
The result reads almost like drawing: blue shapes against off-white, with the seams visible up close and invisible from the doorway. Made entirely by hand by women in the Barmer district, in 100% cotton, 220 x 260 cm.
Because it is hand-sewn, the line of the pattern wanders very slightly. That is the maker, not a fault.
